The design of the BAERVELDT® glaucoma implant enables the physician to choose from a number of proven effective methods to temporarily occlude the drain tube and potentially prevent postoperative hypotony.

  • Absorbable Suture - This technique allows some fluid to leak from an opening to bring the pressure down to a reasonable level until the ligature is absorbed.
  • Rip Cord - A nonabsorbable suture is used to stent the drainage tube and is tucked under the conjuctiva. When the intraocular pressure is at the appropriate level, the stent is removed during a postoperative examination.
  • Laser - The end of the implant drainage tube is ligated with a nylon suture and then inserted in the anterior chamber. At a later date, the drainage tube is opened as the suture is lysed with a laser pulse.
